Volgarr the Viking (AKA: Völgarr the Viking) is an independent action game for multiple platforms, developed by Crazy Viking Studios and published by Adult Swim Games in 2013. It's mainly inspired by classic side-scrolling hack and slash arcade video games from the 1980s like Rastan and Ghosts 'n Goblins, and retains similar graphical style and difficulty level.

Blasphemous is a Metroidvania (Castlevania-like) and Soulslike action adventure video game for both PC and game consoles, developed by The Game Kitchen from Spain in 2019, using Unity. Although the religiously charged plot and beautiful pixel-style graphics earned it high praise, the monotonous action design and inferior control feel make players lose interest and patience quickly.

Timespinner is a well-made 2D Castlevaina-like and metroidvania-style action adventure indie game developed by Lunar Ray Games and published by Chucklefish. The game was inspired by classic '90s video games, such as Castlevania, Mega and Star Ocean.

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a 2D exploration & adventure action game based on Record of Lodoss War, a well-known Japanese fantasy novel series. It was developed by the creator of Team Ladybug and published by PLAYISM from Japan in 2021, and supervised by Ryo Mizuno (水野 良), the author of Record of Lodoss War.

Castlevania: Simon's Destiny is a free (non-profit), fan-made small game developed independently by Batandy with GZDoom engine, based on Konami's Castlevania franchise. This game was originally announced and released in 2017. It is completely standalone, not an MOD (so doesn't require DOOM2.wad), only GZDoom is required to play!
