The updates/patches released by Microsoft have two types: Hotfix and Service Pack. Hotfix is a special solution that Microsoft releases for a specific system vulnerability or security issue, which comes with strict naming, frequent release and large quantity; Service Pack is a large collection of Hotfixes, which contains all Hotfixes released before its release date. If you want to know what patches installed in your Windows, there are two ways:
- By looking up at the corresponding locations (key/value) in the registry manually, like: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\ (for Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003)
- Use special software, like: WinUpdatesList (its working principle is to read the registry information automatically)
NirSoft's tenet is to develop small/tiny and free software to pertinently solve big problems or needs. Its software products and only developer Nir Sofer have been always highly respected by all of us. The same goes for WinUpdatesList (WUL for short). Needless to say too much about it, just in some simple words.
WinUpdatesList is used to display the detailed information (name, description, installation date, web link, updated files list, etc.) of all Windows Updates (both Service Packs and Hotfixes) installed in your Windows. In addition, it also allows you to direct open the official link of the selected update to view the full information about it, and to save the information as TXT/HTML/XML file. BTW, WinUpdatesList also supports features like command line parameters, dual-system and remote reading updates information.
