Warzone 2100 is a completely free and open-source RTS (real-time strategy) and RTT (real-time tactics) hybrid Red Alert like game for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. It was developed by Pumpkin Studios (with C++) and published by Eidos Interactive in 1999.

Warzone 2100 was originally released as a commercial game. In 2004, it released its major game parts (source code and most of its data) as free software under the GPL, and in 2008 it was released entirely as free software, making it completely open-source. Even better, it has been in a constant state of update since its launch in 1999.

Warzone 2100 may not be great in terms of graphics, but the content of the game is excellent, and comes with very high playability and endless replayability. For example, it supports single-player mission mode and multiplayer online mode (via Internet or LAN), supports multiple languages, contains hundreds of components in the technology tree, has the first concept of unit composition, all of units can be integrated from components. Better yet, players can research various unit parts and abilities themselves, then assemble them into unique combat units. This is very creative.

One of the most interesting elements of the single-player campaign is that the player's base and units can be teleported from mission to mission. Players are encouraged to save their units as much as possible, as killing enemies makes them more powerful. In addition, the base micromanagement is reduced as there is no need to build your base from scratch for every battle. All in all, Warzone 2100 is a breath of fresh air in the market that has been flooded with uninspired clones.
