Electronic maps have replaced the traditional printed maps for a long time, especially after GPS became popular. So, most GPS device users should be familiar with OziExplorer. It is a very classic and excellent GPS mapping program developed by Des Newman from Australia in 1996. It is highly customizable, and allows to use and create custom maps for remote locations that are not fully covered by the major map providers like Tele Atlas. Therefore, it is deeply favored by outdoor enthusiasts (especially off-road drivers and adventure travelers).
With OziExplorer, you can load other map data into this software to quickly generate a map model, and use this model to continuously improve the map data. It has a built-in professional navigation design system, so that the navigation map design can be easier, and the map data can be more accurate. Even better, OziExplorer also supports electronic map DIY, allowing you to build personal electronic maps with ease. No matter how small the measuring scale is, or how special the map surface is, as long as you have the original paper map, there is always a way to put the locations, thus becoming a map used for satellite positioning.
As a powerful electronic map making tool, OziExplorer supports directly using Garmin, Magellan, Lowrance/Eagle, Brunton/Silva, MLR GPS and so on GPS receivers to edit, upload and download waypoints, routes and tracks, and provides support for online map services like Google Maps, Google Earth, TerraServer-USA, OpenStreetMap and Virtual Earth. All in all, OziExplorer is absolutely a great helper for designing GPS maps.
Because of the openness of OziExplorer, there are many maps made by users available for download on the Internet. They are generally provided by city, each city contains two separate files, with names like "city name.map" and "city name.ozf2" respectively. These two files should go into the same folder. Thereinto, the .map file is the description file of the .ozf2 file. Users can edit these two map files using any text editor. And, to make the map more accurate, you can take advantage of the 30-point calibration function provided by OziExplorer.
