MakeHuman is a free and open-source realistic 3D human characters modeling tool for illustrations, animations, games, or Zbrush/Mudbox sculpting on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms. It was developed (before version 0.9, written in only C; after version 1.0, in C and Python; from version 1.0.2, only in Python) by a community of programmers, artists, and academics with passion, who are interested in 3D modeling of characters and take contribution for a better world as its purpose.

MakeHuman is developed based on a large number of characteristics data of human morphology (race, gender, age, figure, clothing, etc.), capable of quickly generating the face and body models for men and women in different ages, and allows to adjust the local detailed of body configuration. Its unique "natural posture system" can accurately simulate the skin and tendon transformation of human body that is in a motion state. Additionally, cooperating with Pixar's RenderMan interface compatible AQSIS renderer, MakeHuman can get the final result in an easier way. When the design work is finished, we can export the generated models as OBJ file, Collada file, or other custom file formats for use with Blender.

MakeHuman has the same effect with the commercial software Poser (the relation between them is something like Terragen vs VUE xStream), its compact file size and sophisticated functions are enough to make it be an edge tool for establishing a low-model! It can be applied to human body painting practice, animation or 3D character design, human motion simulation in sports training, and some other relevant fields. Especially, even if you know nothing about 3D modeling, as long as you learn the basic proportion and have certain art accomplishment education, MakeHuman does meet your needs well.
