When it comes to insanely difficult platformer games, many players in Asia will think of Cat Mario (Syobon Action) from Japan. In fact, in the same year, there was a game called I Wanna Be the Guy that was popular around the world. It is much more difficult than Cat Mario. Even if you have watched various walkthroughs, speedruns, and know the distribution of traps, the results will not help. Generally, you can't get past a level without trying hundreds of times.
I Wanna Be the Guy (IWBTG for short) is a classic adventure game with very high difficulty and popularity, developed by Michael "Kayin" O'Reilly using Multimedia Fusion 2 game engine in 2007. It's famous for unusually difficult platforming elements, unorthodox level design, and sound effects, characters, and music from many other classic video games. In 2011, Kayin released the source code of I Wanna Be the Guy to public; in 2012, he released its first sequel - I Wanna be the Guy: Gaiden, and in 2020, he released its remastered edition - I Wanna be the Guy: Remastered.
The release of I Wanna Be the Guy attracted a large number of players around the world, and some fans began to create their own fan games (known as IWBTG Fangames). Later, there were more and more fanfic works, and the corresponding atmosphere and circle of games were gradually formed and continue to this day. Since most fan games also have "I Wanna" in their titles, players tend to refer to them as "I Wanna" series. Over the years, I Wanna has diversified into many different genres and gameplays with various elements. As of writing this post. there have been 11000+ I Wanna games cataloged on Delicious Fruit and nearly 10,000 on I Wanna Wiki.
