Mechanical hard drives can be very fast when reading sequential files, such as copying movies. But when we usually use the operating system, the most common application is reading scattered files, such as operating system startup, opening programs, web browsing cache, etc. Each time we need to read many small files distributed in different locations on the disk. Mechanical hard drives rely on the magnetic head to constantly seek before it can read. It seeks and reads again and again, so a lot of time is spent on seeking and reading scattered small files.
ReadyBoost is a very eye-catching feature first introduced to Windows Vista (i.e. Windows NT 6.x). It can use flash memory as a disk cache to improve Windows performance via USB 2.0 interface. In fact, in systems after Windows XP, we can also use software such as eBoostr to implement a smart caching mechanism similar to ReadyBoost to make the computer run faster and smoother. The ReadyBoost function was originally not optimistic. With the popularity of USB-3.0, the improvement of the performance of the USB drive itself, as well as the price getting cheaper, eBoostr has become more practical.
eBoostr (discontinued in 2022) is an alternative solution to the ReadyBoost and Superfetch technologies available since Windows Vista. It speeds up your PC and improves application responsiveness by using flash memory and free RAM as an extra layer of performance-boosting cache for your PC. With it, you can use up to four inexpensive flash devices to speed up your system, and add more speed to your PC without any hardware upgrade.
Although the reading performance of USB flash drives cannot be compared with that of solid-state drives, the 4K random reading performance is still about 5 times higher than that of mechanical hard drives. eBoostr does not turn flash memory into physical memory, but takes advantage of the fast read characteristics of flash memory to cache pre-read scattered files, thereby improving the random access performance of the operating system and software on mechanical hard disks. Similar software is PrimoCache, and its complementary programs include Primo Ramdisk, SoftPerfect RAM Disk, Ultra RAMDisk, VSuite Ramdisk, Dataram RAMDisk, etc.
