Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is a 8-bit, 2D action adventure small video game with retro style, developed by Koji Igarashi & Inti Creates video game development company from Japan and published in 2018, regarded as an unofficial successor of the original Castlevania. It makes a lot of references from the official Castlevania works (primarily the Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse) released on the Nintendo NES game console.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon shares the same worldview setting with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (known as one of the "spiritual sequels" of Castlevania, and as of writing this post, it's not completely yet). But unlike the latter, Curse of the Moon provides a total of 4 playable characters for switching whenever necessary: the default swordsman Zangetsu, the heroine in Ritual of the Night Miriam and hero Gebel, as well as an old magician Alfred. Although Curse of the Moon can be considered to be a prequel mini-game of Ritual of the Night, the two are completely different games. Even so, in AppNee's opinion, its potential is limitless, and it's enough to develop into a series of its own.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon has similar scenes, gameplay and settings with the early game works of Castlevania series (especially the Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse on NES platform), and introduced many fire-new elements that brought this game extremely high replayability. For example: the team-mate system allows to switch between the four playable characters at any time; each character has different attack pattern and a different amount of health points (HP); different levels require the special abilities of different characters to walk through; a variety of game lines, difficulties and endings (the seemingly easiest route is usually the hardest one to finish) according to the choice you make when recruiting new adventurers, and so on. These are enough to make those fans players who miss the golden years of Castlevania series of games become crazy, and offer them a new big challenge at the same time.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon tried to perpetuate the Castlevania legend by setting the game background in the time-honored 8-bit works of this series. This way, it not only paid tribute to the classic Castlevania games on NES platform, but also went "too far" - almost became a new orthodox sequel of Castlevania.
